The short version: your songs, riffs and recordings stay on your device. To find a path or read a riff, your browser sends our server a little information, the server sends back the answer, and it keeps nothing. There are no ads, no tracking cookies, and no accounts for the free tools. We count visits, without cookies.
Who we are
LazyFret is made by Stratis Crest, in Ontario, Canada. If you have a question about anything here, write to hello@lazyfret.com.
The microphone
Two tools ask to use your microphone, and only when you start them. You can say no, or turn it off in your browser's settings, and everything else keeps working.
- The Tuner listens while it's on and works out the pitch in your browser. Nothing is recorded or saved, and it stops listening when you leave the page.
- Whistle2Riff records while you're recording. The recording never leaves your device, and it's kept only if you tap Save riff. Your browser works out the pitch it hears, and only that goes to our server.
What goes to our server
SmartPath and Whistle2Riff do part of their work on our server, at api.lazyfret.com. It works out the answer, sends it back and keeps nothing: what you send isn't stored or logged.
- SmartPath sends the chord names you're asking about, your tuning and your barre setting, and gets shapes back.
- Whistle2Riff sends the line of pitches and loudness your browser heard, with your tempo. It isn't sound: it can't be played back as your recording.
Like any server, ours sees your internet address while it answers. Our app holds it in memory for a minute or two, to stop anyone overloading the service, and doesn't write it down. Our web host, Hostinger, may keep its usual access logs, which record addresses and which pages were asked for, but not what you send.
What's saved on your device
These live in your browser's own storage. They aren't sent to us, and we can't see them.
- LazyFret Daily: today's game, your streak and your stats.
- SmartPath: your songs, your saved strums and your settings.
- Whistle2Riff: the riffs you save, with their recordings, and your settings.
Clearing your browser's data deletes all of this, and so can some browsers on their own after a while. We can't bring it back, because we never had it.
What you choose to share
Daily's Share buttons, and copying a riff's tab, hand a picture or text to you or to the app you pick. Nothing goes anywhere unless you tap. Daily's picture and text never show the day's chord.
What our web host sees
Our pages are served by Hostinger. Like any web host, it keeps standard logs of requests, such as your IP address, your browser and the pages asked for, to run the site and keep it secure. Hostinger's own privacy policy covers those logs. We don't use them to work out who you are.
Counting visits
We count how many people use LazyFret, so we can tell what's working. We use GoatCounter, which needs no cookies and doesn't follow anyone from site to site or from day to day.
For each page, we send the page's address (without anything after a ?), its title, the site you came from if it isn't ours, and your screen's width. GoatCounter also sees your browser and your rough location, as any site you visit does, and turns those into totals.
We also count a few moments, by fixed names: a puzzle finished, a streak of three or seven days, a path found, a song played, a riff recorded or saved, the Tuner started, a link followed, a result shared, a waitlist sign-up. These are counts, nothing more. A chord, a song, a riff, a recording and your streak itself are never sent.
If you join the waitlist
The waitlist, and the list to hear about the launch once it's full, are the one place a visitor gives us an email address, and only if they tick the box. We send one email to check the address is yours. Until you tap its link you're not on either list, and if you don't, we delete your address within 7 days.
Once you've confirmed, we keep your address, when you confirmed, and which wording you agreed to, on our own database at Hostinger. That record shows you said yes. Our emails go through Google, which runs our mail.
We use your address to tell you about the LazyFret app and your launch price, and for nothing else. We don't sell it. If we use a mail service to send the launch emails, we'll name it here first. We'll delete the lists once the launch offer is over.
You can leave at any time: use the unsubscribe link in any email, or write to hello@lazyfret.com.
If you're a beta tester
The Pro beta has a sign-in, for the testers we've invited. For each tester we keep their email address, whether their login is switched on, and a record of each device signed in: when it signed in and when that runs out. That's how a login stays with one person. It doesn't include your internet address, your browser, or anything you make.
A cookie keeps you signed in. It's only on the Pro pages, it isn't used for tracking, and it lasts up to 90 days, or until you sign out. Your songs and riffs in Pro stay on your device, like everyone else's, and Pro's pages are counted the same way as the rest of the site.
Ask us to delete your record and we will. That ends your login.
What we don't do
- No accounts or sign-up for the free tools.
- No advertising, and no selling of anything about you.
- No tracking cookies, and no third-party scripts. The only cookie is a beta tester's sign-in. Our fonts are served from our own site.
If you email us
We keep your message and your address so we can reply. Ask us to delete them and we will.
Children
Anyone can play. The tools and games don't ask anyone, of any age, for personal information. The waitlist is for adults.
Your rights
You can ask what we hold about you, and ask us to correct or delete it. In practice that's any email you've sent us, a waitlist address, and a beta tester's record, because everything else stays on your device. Write to hello@lazyfret.com.
If this changes
If we add something new, such as paid plans, we'll update this page and the date at the top first.
